Actually, this is something you need to ask your dentist. Ask him/her what exactly each thing they are doing is doing and how it’s going to help. What is the expected risk of each thing and what are the expected outcomes. With how complex it sounds, (s)he may need to get into biology to explain.

No, tooth whitening would NOT help in this case, The discoloration is WAY too deep inside the structure of the tooth. The best thing would be to get porcelain veneers made by your dentist. It involves little if any grinding of the tooth itself, and the results look extremely natural. It is not cheap, however, but it is significantly cheaper than getting crowns, and does not permanently damage the tooth like a crown would.

I realize that this is a site for people to get advice from many different sources, but I don’t understand why some people with only vague dental knowledge or no dental knowledge, are on here giving dental advice. That would be like me getting on the section about vehicles and telling people what is wrong with their cars. I wouldn’t have a clue and would be giving bad advice. I have seen some dental advice on here that is so off the mark, that it is almost funny. I don’t know if some people are making up what they are telling people or they are repeating something they heard somewhere. There are alot of people getting on here and asking questions, really looking for good, solid dental advice and they don’t know what to believe when they are getting so many different opinions. I have seen people give totally wrong advice to someone, and yet they get voted Best Answer, when someone else actually gave them a more accurate answer. Why are people giving such bad dental advice?
If someone wants good dental advice, you would probably better off looking at the answers given by the dentists and other dental professionals on here. You would certainly get better advice than what I have seen from others.

I have been a dental assistant for 10 yrs. and I certainly know who wrong some of the people on here giving advice are.
Tyler hun, the next time you have a broken tooth or a toothache, make sure that you go to a “real” doctor, cause you know, dentists are too slow. RIGHT?!?

sounds like TMJ problems, if you want to get rid of it yourself you can try having a soft diet temporarily and try to relax your jaw (no chewing gum for example), but ultimately since its showing signs besides just popping noises you might be better off getting it looked it.
